UFC President Dana White (shown above with UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey) announced Friday the plans to add a women’s flyweight division to the UFC.  White said the division, whose weight limit is 115 pounds, will be crucial to the promotion’s expansion internationally.

UFC President Dana White announced the UFC’s plan to add a 115-pound women’s straw-weight division to the promotion.  White told heavyweight fighter Brendan Schaub who co-hosts FOXSports.com’s podcast, “The Fighter and the Kid.”

The UFC made the announcement just moments ago through their Twitter account.

I’ll give you guys something nobody knows yet,” White had told Schaub.  “We’re actually working on bringing in another division for the women, which I said would never happen for a long time.

When Schaub asked if he meant 125-lbs. or 145-lbs., White responded, “Neither… 115-lbs.

The decision, it seems, is at least in part due to the huge success the women’s division has had in the most recent season of the UFC’s reality-television show, “The Ultimate Fighter.”

I never in a million years thought that it would take off the way that it has,” White said.

The announcement comes after the UFC has made huge plans for expanding its global market internationally, focusing a lot of time this coming year to events in Europe and Asia.  White said, and has said a number of times, that smaller weight classes are an important part to the UFC’s expansion to other countries.  Last year the UFC added a men’s flyweight (125-lb.) division, and it looks like the womens’ straw-weight is the next to be added.
