UFC Dana White is eating his words a bit as he announced at the UFC 170 pre-fight presser that he expected a gate of $2 million for the event featuring UFC women’s bantamweight champion Rhonda Rousey as she successfully defended her title against Sara McMann. However, the gate wasn’t quite there capping at $1,558,870 and having brought 10,217 fans to the seats at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, NV. Dana responded to the news with “Are you fucking kidding me, it’s 1.5?”
White has recently made statements that Rhonda Rousey is the biggest start in UFC history. However, it seems that the numbers tell a different story. When asked during the post fighter press conference why the numbers where so much lower than expected White simply stated “I just found out. It’s a good question though.”
However, Dana was quick to defend the female fighters in saying that they still were able to pull of the largest women’s combat event in history. The UFC president didn’t seem to heart broken as he stated that is was still more than Rhonda brought in during her last outing.
Although the numbers weren’t as expected it’s undeniable what the UFC was able to pull off with a card headlining a bout between two women and were able to pull in the views and buys that UFC 170 was able to. It’s absolutely revolutionary in the movement of women’s MMA, and this is seemingly just the beginning as new weight classes and new talent surface everyday.
