UFC light heavyweight contender Dan Henderson announced last night on Spike TV’s “MMA Uncensored Live” he will face former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida in Las Vegas on Super Bowl Weekend.
UFC 156 is scheduled to take place on February 2nd in Las Vegas and will feature a main event for the UFC Featherweigh Championship as Jose Aldo will defend his title against Frankie Edgar in the latter’s debut in the featherweight division.
Henderson has been out of action since November of 2011 where he defeated another former light heavyweight champion, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in what was one of the best fights in UFC history. The victory earned Henderson a title shot which was scheduled for September 1 at UFC 151 against Jon Jones, but a knee injury put “Hendo” on the shelf and the ensuing drama caused the cancellation of the entire card.
Machida is coming off a second round knockout win over Ryan Bader at UFC on Fox 4 this past August. “The Dragon” was offered an opportunity to replace Henderson against Jones, but turned down the opportunity to face Jones at UFC 152, citing a lack of preparation time.
The winner of this contest will more than likely face the winner of Jones-Chael Sonnen which will take place April 27th. Jones owns a second round submission win over Machida when the two met at UFC 140 last December. Henderson is still looking to add the one title that has eluded him throughout his 15 year career.
One other bout has been rumored for UFC 156 and that is a light heavyweight contest pitting former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Evans has been out of action since losing to Jones via unanimous deicision at UFC 145 in April. Nogueira was last seen scoring a first round TKO victory over Tito Ortiz at UFC 140.Tags: antonio rogerio nogueira, Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson, featured, jon jones, lyoto machida, Mauricio shogun rua, tito ortiz, UFC 139, UFC 140, ufc 145, UFC 151, ufc 156, ufc news
