As Dan Henderson prepares for his rematch against Vitor Belfort at UFC Fight Night 32 Saturday night, one question seems to follow him in interviews and media appearances: when is the 43-year-old fighter going to retire?
The answer: not yet.
Henderson spoke to MMAJunkie.com, saying that he has no intention of retiring, even if he loses against Belfort on Saturday.
“I’ve never, ever said I was going to stop fighting,” said Henderson. “Win or lose, I’m still going to fight… I feel great, and for me that’s a big part of being able to perform well is how I feel. I feel great for this fight.”
As far as when he thinks retirement may be possible, Henderson said he doesn’t expect to even consider it for another couple of years.
“I feel good and I know I’m able to compete with the top guys in the sport. I’m thinking it will be at least two years before I talk about retiring.
“[My goal is] try to be the best guy out there, which means getting a belt or having a title shot. Those are the goals and that’s what I’m striving toward achieving.”
In the UFC, Randy Couture won the UFC heavyweight belt at the age of 43. Renzo Gracie, 46, is talking about a return to professional MMA. And in boxing, only a couple of weeks ago legend Bernard Hopkins defended his IBF light heavyweight title at the age of 48.
With a record like Henderson’s, whose last three fights include three former UFC light heavyweight champions, it certainly stands that the man is still fighting at the top of the sport. In Belfort, he will fight arguably today’s top middleweight knockout artist, though the two will fight at 205 lbs.
UFC Fight Night 32 takes place Saturday, November 9 at 8pm/5pm ETPT, airing live from Brazil on FOX Sports 1. Preliminary fights will air before the main card beginning at 6pm/3pm ETPT.Tags: aging fighters, Dan Henderson, mma, MMA NEWS, retired fighters, ufc, UFC FIGHT NIGHT 32, ufc fight night 32: belfort vs henderson 2, ufc news, Vitor Belfort
