Dan Henderson On New UFC Deal: ‘I kind of had to swallow my pride and take a pay cut’

Dan Henderson is in talked with the UFC about a possible rematch with Shogun Rua, a fight that all fight fans, myself included, would love to see take place. However, with his recent loss to No. 1 contender Vitor Belfort is seems that Henderson was forced to do some renegotiating of his contract. Basically, he took a pay cut.

This doesn’t seem to bother Henderson that much though. Especially considering that he feels that the UFC is his best chance to make a decent payday.

“Basically, you’ve got to take what you get sometimes. On the flip side of that, the UFC has built their organization big enough to be able to pay the top guys pretty decent, so you can’t really complain too much about them.”

According to an interview on BloodyElbow.com Henderson went on to talk about his contract negotiations with Dana, Lorenzo, and the company among other things. But what is clear is that Henderson has all intentions to pick up the slack created by the absence of some of the promotions biggest draws.

“My agent usually talks with their attorneys. From there, they run it by Dana and Lorenzo, and occasionally, they get on a call with all of them together-Dana, Lorenzo and the attorneys.”

It seems that Henderson is understanding that with a loss like he had against Vitor he isn’t really in a position to argue with what his bosses say, so he decided to let things take their natural course and work itself out.

“You know, I kind of had to swallow my pride a little bit and take a pay cut,” said Henderson. “They are giving me a chance to get back where I was if I get some wins on the books, though. It could be worse, but it could be better, as well.”

The rematch between Henderson and Shogun is rumored to take place this March. Let’s hope Henderson is prepared for the bout considering how much of a war it was the last time. With a victory over Shogun it’s fair to assume we could be Henderson back within title contingency and possibly see the long awaited match up between him and light heavyweight king Jon Jones. Only time will tell.
