In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos discussed her request for release from Zuffa as well as the ongoing verbal banter between herself and current UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Ronda Rousey.
In the video, Cyborg remains adamant that she will not drop to 135. She suggests that she could make 140 lbs, or even go up to fight at 155 lbs. Despite public interest and even statements from one of the sport’s leading nutritionalists, Mike Dolce, Cyborg and her manager, UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz, insist that she will not drop the weight.
When asked if she thinks Rousey is avoiding her, Cyborg affirmed that “she [Rousey] started in my weight-class and dropped to 135… she’s running from me. She fought Judo at 154 or 152. I don’t know why she can’t fight at 145.” Cyborg goes on to state, “I don’t need to prove anything for nobody… I’m still champion.”
Ronda Rousey, who is currently training for her first UFC title defense against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157, has not responded to this video.
This interview raises a number of questions for Cris “Cyborg” Santos. First, it should be stated that Strikeforce stripped her of her featherweight title following her testing positive for stanozolol in December 2011. Even still, she poses the greatest threat to any female fighter at 145 lbs. Which of course begs the question, who is there to fight Cyborg? And more importantly, if not for the UFC, under what organization will she fight? Finally, when she does fight, we all are wondering how she will respond to so much time off- her last fight occurring almost 14 months ago.
While the forums will be ablaze with vocal supporters of both Cyborg and Rousey, it seems the fight world will have to wait some time before we know if such a fight is in the cards or not.
