Cub Swanson: ‘Aldo’s highlight reel haunts me, but I promise I’ll be champ’ – EXCLUSIVE

August 21, 2014 2:12 pm by Jake Chastain Radio was lucky enough to recently welcome UFC featherweight Cub Swanson on to the airwaves. Cub is considered one of the most explosive, dynamic, and entertaining fighters in the UFC and he is, without a doubt, likely one win away from a UFC featherweight title fight. Swanson is currently riding a six-fight winning streak with his most recent win coming this past June when he dominated Jeremy Stephens in a Fight of the Night performance in Texas. In his interview with Radio Swanson discussed his passion and drive to become the best fighter on the planet, to hold UFC gold, and to get revenge against current UFC Featherweight Champion, Jose Aldo. Swanson also discussed his desire to stay active and he even mentioned a possible fight with Frankie Edgar later this year. Here are some of the highlights from that interview:

Swanson was first asked how he felt about the recent success that he’s been having:

“Having my success now, toward the latter half of my career, it’s awesome. I’ve been able to see things from a different perspective.”

“I think at this point in my career is the most I’ve ever been ready.”

Swanson, who has been fighting for about 10 years now, discussed his journey to the top of MMA and his continually evolution as a fighter:

“I’ve taken the long, hard road…and I will get the belt. I promise. And it’s gonna be my way. I don’t care what people say.”

“I’ve learned to constantly evolve my game even when I was limited with what I had.”

“I think that’s why it’s taken me so long to be good is because I’ve changed my style so many times and I’m barely learning who I am as a fighter.”

Cub was also asked what he expected to be next for him. Aldo is currently scheduled to fight Chad Mendes for the title, so that leaves Cub without an opponent. He explained:

“I don’t want to sit out, so we were talking about getting the Frankie Edgar fight. I told them I was up for it as long as it was on a big card. If I could get on that Fox card with him then that would be a big fight for me that I would be up for. I just want to stay active. I don’t want to sit out again. I really want to fight again this year. I want to take him out and then get the title shot.”

Cub Swanson was then asked about a possible rematch with Jose Aldo, who Cub lost to via a perfectly placed flying knee from Aldo way back in 2009 for the WEC title. Swanson explained:

“I’ve never been as hungry as I am right now.”

“It’s something I’ve wanted for five years and it’s been burning in my heart ever since. I’m on his highlight reel. That’s forever haunted me.”

“If me and him fight again it’s going to be a dog fight, and I know I’m going to win.”

Swanson was then asked what he wanted more: the title or revenge over Aldo. He responded:

“Both. To do it at the same time would be epic. It’d be fairytale ending to my rise.”

“For me, getting the belt would put a stamp on my career. It’s something that I need to accomplish. All these fights in the mean time are just opportunities to showcase my skills and have epic battles and to be able to say that I beat all these people.”

“From day one my goal was to be the best and I haven’t accomplished that yet.”

We would like to thank Cub Swanson for taking the time to share his thoughts and inside knowledge with the fans here at and we look forward to seeing him back in the cage very soon. Best of luck, Cub.
