Cormier Prepping For Surgery after UFC Fan Wrestling Expo Match Up

With Jones vs. Gustafsson 2 officially in the books, top light heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier has elected to have surgery on his right knee. The former Olympian is suffering from a torn LCL and partially damaged ACL.

Undefeated Cormier suffered the injury to his LCL about 10 days out from his UFC 173 bout against light heavyweight legend Dan Henderson. A more recent MRI showed that on top of the LCL injury, his ACL was only 50% intact due to the normal wear of a career of wrestling and MMA.

Cormier plans on undergoing surgery in the first week of July in California, but he still has one more task he wants to complete before the long period of rest that the surgery will bring about.

Cormier told Ariel Helwani on yesterday’s episode of UFC Tonight, that he planned on completing one more wrestling match at the UFC Fan Expo on July 5th, where he could officially end his wrestling career against NCAA champion Chris Pendleton. He wants to get the chance to leave his wrestling career in a better light than he previously did, where he unfortunately had to bow out of his 2008 Olympic run due to kidney failure.

After this match, Cormier’s surgery will very likely have him on the sidelines for the next several months while Jon Jones faces off against Alexander Gustafsson for the second time on September 27th.
