Conor McGregor Needs To Tone Down The Talk Until He Proves His Worth

I’ll give Conor McGregor credit; the Irish bad boy knows how to get his name in the headlines, even while he sits on the sidelines, recovering from knee surgery.

McGregor, though, has a little bit of a misunderstanding going on about himself. He’s not quite the best fighter in the world – yet – like he would have you believe.

The hype-train picked up steam after he destroyed Marcus Brimage, and continued on with a fine performance over Max Holloway in which he dominated. But McGregor needs to showcase much, much more before he makes the kind of statements he is already proclaiming.

Or he’ll be nothing more than Chael Sonnen.

McGregor referred Cub Swanson as an “old man,” says he’ll “whip” Cole Miller, “smash” Chad Mendes and “annihilate” UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Sound familiar? Sonnen made the same remarks about fighters such as Anderson Silva and Jon Jones before exiting the cage with a big “L” on his resume.

If you just heard McGregor’s comments, you might think he is only doing a great job of self-publicity, which you can’t fault in this day and age of social media and marketing. But McGregor believes his remarks. He lives by them. And this is where he might get himself in trouble.

You can call out all the fighters you want, but you won’t have the respect of those challengers if you don’t step up to the plate and knock out a home run each time.

That means no decision victories. No extended stays on the sidelines. And definitely no defeats.

McGregor has put so much pressure on himself, that even a small hiccup – which is very easy to see happen in the UFC – will deflate the tires on his express. Dana White and the rest of the UFC brass appear to believe in McGregor, bringing him back with a main event fight in his home country of Ireland, and that should only do more to boost his stock.

Can he smash Mendes like he says? Would he annihilate Aldo? It all starts with Miller, and it needs to be convincing.
