Cole Miller Speaks Out Against Unqualified Judges

October 30, 2013 12:22 pm by Josh Yelverton

Judging in MMA is quite possibly the most debated aspect of mixed martial arts as of today. It’s a subject that instantly sparks the tempers of a lot of people and causes their blood to boil. None more so than the fighters that have to deal with the judging, namely Cole Miller. The American Top Team representative has just recently rebounded from a loss in his last fight with a win over Andy Ogle at UFC Fight Night 30. However, he still maintains the unwavering belief that he defeated Manny Gamburyan in his last fight that was deemed a loss, and cites it as a bright example of why judging is an unrelenting problem in MMA.

“These [officials] want to say that I ‘lost,’ but I’m the one doing all the damage,” said the TUF 5 alumni.

Miller even supports this by stating that Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, and several media outlets and analysts scored the fight in his favor. Also, that is going without even taking into consideration the odd occurrence when Gamburyan and his corner took extra time in between the first two rounds to recover from Gamburyan seemingly getting knocked out by two elbows that appeared to be perfectly legal. Even though Miller clearly caused more damage to his opponent, he still received another loss on his record for his trouble. Miller is far from the only one who has been plagued with the wrestling bias of judging, as many fighters have bashed their opponents with strikes, threatened them with submissions, and taken little damage only to be outscored due to takedowns.

“They’re not even qualified to be making the calls they’re making. That’s kind of disgusting and that’s really unfortunate in our sport, because it changes the whole landscape of our sport. When you have unqualified people judging mixed martial arts, it changes the way that mixed martial arts is actually fought, because fighters are now adjusting their styles to please people that don’t know anything about our sport.”

Miller’s statement rings true, for it seems that spectators are starting to see “lay and pray” more often these days, as well as fights being scored in a manner that doesn’t make sense by any logic. With more and more fighters being cut, that puts more pressure on fighters to get wins by any means necessary. In addition to a revamped scoring system, perhaps more fighters-turned-judges such as Ricardo Almeida would make a big difference. Only time will tell if the judging will make a turn for the better anytime soon.
