Following his second defeat of long-time pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva, UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman (above) began assessing his next opponent, Brazilian veteran Vitor Belfort.

With his first title defense successfully completed at UFC 168, UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will get to face an opponent who is not Anderson Silva.  UFC President Dana White confirmed at the post-fight press conference that Weidman will face Vitor Belfort in his next bout.
And if you ask Weidman, Belfort couldn’t be any more different than the man he has fought and defeated twice now in Silva.

They are two completely different guys,” Weidman said of Silva and Belfort on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show.  “One guy is rangy, technical, very slick.  Belfort is more of a powerhouse guy who will come in and bring the heat.”

That is certainly what Belfort has done all this past year, scoring three head-kick knockouts against Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson.  It’s a vintage Vitor Belfort that has fans clamoring for more and opponents somewhat nervous.

Except Chris Weidman, who says he’s ready.

I am ready to get in there right away,” he said about facing Belfort.  There was just one problem.  “I might have a meniscus tear, so I will get that (checked out) and maybe have tow-or-three weeks off and go from there.

Having defeated long-time pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva twice now, it is difficult to imagine Weidman having difficulty with any opponent; but with the year that Vitor Belfort has had, there are very few men who look ready to defeat ‘The Phenom.’  Assuming Weidman’s knee is cleared soon, this fight has Fight of the Year potential in 2014.
