The heated rivalry between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva heats up even more, as it has been confirmed that Sonnen will coach Brazilian fighters in the upcoming Ultimate Figher Brazil season. Many people thought it would be a Brazil vs. United States season, but it seems that Sonnen will be training fighters from the country that has had harsh words for him in the past.
Sonnen has proven his acumen as a coach on TUF season 17, as Sonnen-trained Kelvin Gastelum ended up winning the season by beating betting favorite, and fellow teammate Urijah Hall.
UFC President Dana White said of this season, “this is a big rivalry. I don’t know how many Brazilians will want be on Chael’s team, but he was a great coach on The Ultimate Fighter 17 in the U.S.”
White reconfirmed that TUF Brazil season 3 will feature a purely Brazilian cast at the UFC Fight Night 32 Press Conference, and that coach Sonnen will indeed be coaching Brazilian fighters.
Sonnen recanted a conversation he had with UFC Color Commentator Joe Rogan to Bleacher Report, and said, “My understanding is that the show will have purely Brazilian contestants. That’s a little different than in America, where we bring in competitors from all over the world. I know on my last team we had a gentleman from England [on TUF 17],” Sonnen said. “I had a gentleman from Jamaica. I had a gentleman from Sweden. All on one team. But when we take the show to a foreign market, we seem to only build talent from that market. It’s a bit of a different formula.”
It is still to be seen how the Brazilians take to having Sonnen as a coach, but it should end up being an entertaining season nonetheless.
