During a pre-UFC 159 conference call Monday, Chael Sonnen resumed a familiar tune by once again belittling UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva. During the call, Sonnen insisted that his upcoming opponent, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, is a better fighter than Silva.
“I don’t think they’re close,” Sonnen remarked about the two champions. “I think Jones is considerably better than Anderson.”
Anderson Silva, of course, holds two victories over Chael Sonnen. The first was a fifth round submission victory via triangle choke in what was one of the best comebacks in combat sports; the second was a second round TKO from a knee and punches. In both fights, however, Chael Sonnen demonstrated top-level wrestling and even striking that allowed him to control Anderson Silva like no one has before or since.
Seemingly ignoring the outcomes, Sonnen insists that these two fights were victories. He asserted during the call, “I stomped that guy, and you can pick up his little arm as many times as you want and call him the winner, but the fact is that I whipped his ass for 30 minutes. He got to jump on me for less than 30 seconds. He never knocked me down. I fell down. They say Anderson’s the best pound-for-pound. He’s not the best round-for-round… I doubt anyone on this call even has a 10-8 round. I have three of them. They’re all against Anderson Silva. So, if you think Jon and Anderson are even close, I will run through Jon because I ran through Anderson.”
Marking his first fight at light heavyweight a number of years, many have questioned Chael’s immediate shot at the 205 lb belt. Sonnen insisted that his performances against Anderson Silva warrant this Saturday’s title shot.
“Sometimes I hear that I don’t deserve this fight, or that I’m not the right guy. But then I hear that Anderson can beat [Jones]. You’ve got to be kidding me. I stomped Anderson Silva, twice.”
Of course, Chael Sonnen’s brash statements are only logical. If he defeats Jon Jones on Saturday, these comparisons will serve to aggrandize the feat of winning. If Jones wins, then Sonnen will take a loss to a fighter he says is better than the man almost everyone believes is the best in the world.
