Chael Sonnen Cleared for TRT Use for Fight with Shogun Rua

Chael Sonnen is perhaps the most notorious fighter using Testosterone Replacement Therapy after he tested positive for high testosterone levels in his first loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117.  In a recent interview, he confirmed that the athletic commission in Massachusetts has accepted his request for theraputic use of TRT for his UFC bout with Mauricio Shogun Rua on FOX Sports 1.

UFC light heavyweight fighter, Chael Sonnen, has been granted a Theraputic Use Exemption for Testosterone Replacement Therapy prior to his UFC Fight Night bout with Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua on August 17.

Sonnen confirmed this with before insisting, in typical Chael Sonnen fashion, that his positive test in 2010 was on the fault of the athletic commission.  While on that topic, Sonnen went on to bash athletic commissions as a whole, as well.

That got accepted on the record,” Sonnen said first of his TUE through the Massachusetts commission.  “They had a meeting.  But, I never broke a rule anywhere.  In California, they said that your T[estosterone] to E[strogen] ration was high.  Well it was!  I was on testosterone.  They didn’t understand their own test.  They go, ‘No, your levels are way too high, you’re 17-1.’  It’s like, guys, I could be 1700 to 1, I’m still within the legal limit.  You don’t understand your own test.  So they give me six months [suspension] instead of a year.  The referee that night is now in prison, and that executive director is back home in Washington state and has been fired.  But these are the guys that I’m working with.  This is what you get when you deal with government.

“So I sit before the six-person commission, doesn’t know their own rules, and anytime I say that I feel like I’m being condescending.  But here’s the reality: they don’t know their own rules.  I can go one by one and say, ‘What’s on page three?  It says right there that testosterone is legal.  You brought me in here for taking a legal substance called testosterone.  Page three of your rules says it’s legal, what am I doing here?’  ‘Oh, we didn’t know, we didn’t see page three.’  So you kind of sit there and scratch your head.  It’s the blind leading the blind.  So what do I do?  I can take them to court and sue them, but now I’ve got to sit out.   I don’t get my license back until the court case is over.  So they really got you, and it’s very inappropriate.

While the business of Sonnen’s suspension was largely in the past, the fighter’s rant showed a little lingering frustration with athletic commissions in general.  Even still, it seems that he took the correct steps to clear his use of TRT before his August fight, a step he overlooked back in 2010.

Leading up to the August 17 fight with Rua, Sonnen has been exceptionally quiet in regard to his opponent.  The self-proclaimed king of trash talk has shown respect for his opponent, even going so far as to call Shogun a legend and publicly give the former pride and UFC champion his admiration.

UFC Fight Night will be the UFC’s debut event on FOX Sports 1, the broadcast company’s new full-time sports network.  The main card and some preliminary fights will air on FS1, with several preliminary fights first airing on Facebook.
