In lieu of the removal of Jones vs Cormier from the main event of UFC 178, the UFC has added a new stellar bout to the card, and fixed another.
Late Thursday night the UFC announced that Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was going up against Bobby Green. Green was originally slatted to fight Jorge Masvidal, but with the new switch up, Masvidal will be paired up with James Krause for a lightweight bout.
Cowboy Cerrone is a huge fan favorite and is on a four-fight win streak, winning his $50,000 bonus every time. With a 24-6 record (11-3 strictly in the Octagon) he has lived up to his hype and his status. His submission of Edson Barboza and his head kick knockout of UFC vet Jim Miller this year have solidified him as a formidable force.
Bobby Green is also on a winning streak of his own, with eight straight wins and 3 years separating him from his last loss in Strikeforce. In July, he pulled out a split decision win over Josh Thompson, bringing his win streak to four since he entered the octagon.
Krause was also on an eight-fight winning streak before it was broken last November by his controversial fight with Bobby Green. He pulled himself back into the winner’s circle in May, however, with a win over Jamie Varner by TKO when Varner suffered a gruesome injury to his ankle.
Jorge Masdival is coming off of back-to-back wins in the Octagon, both coming by decision to Daron Cruickshank and Pat Healy. He has a fairly impressive record of 27-8 with 4-1 in the UFC. He will be trying to keep his current streak alive.
These match ups are set for September 27th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The new card now looks like this:
• Champ Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso – for flyweight title
• Donald Cerrone vs. Bobby Green
• Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki
