January 14, 2014 12:53 pm by Kenya Owens

Tragic news is just hitting the MMA world today, as we learn of the death of Cat Zingano’s husband, Mauricio Zingano. Zingano was just 37 years old when he was found dead in his Westminster, Colorado home Monday night.

There is currently no cause of death determined in the case, but the Jefferson County coroner’s office has already deemed that the death was not suspicious. An autopsy has not officially been decided on yet, but according to Deputy Chief Coroner Dan Pruitt, it is likely to occur, considering his age.

Neither Cat Zingano nor her manager, Ed Soares, have been avail able for comment but sources close to the family are obviously requesting privacy and space during this difficult time.

Cat Zingano has recently been on the mend from torn ACL during a promising and exciting first year in the UFC. Because of this injury, Miesha Tate was put in her place to take on Ronda Rousey and coach The Ultimate Fighter. The MMA community had high hopes of seeing Zingano healed up in time to fight Rousey in spring of 2014, but because of her still healing injury, Sara McMann was recently put in her place.

Today, Cat posted a brief status update on her facebook saying, “I will always love you Mauricio.”

Our many prayers go out to the Zingano Family during this difficult time.

[UPDATE: According to a recent posting by, there may be evidence of an appearent suicide. According to a family friend and trainer Jorge Guimarães:

“Yes, he hanged himself in Denver on Monday. It’s something unexplainable, do not know what may have motivated him to do so. We were together and he was fine, had plans and a lifetime ahead. It’s a tragedy. I’m going to Denver today to assist Cat, who is devastated, does not know what to do.”

We will obviously keep you updated on the details of this story as they are made clear and will be sending all of our best wishes and love to Cat Zingano and family through this tragedy.
