Former UFC interim welterweight champion and World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight champion, Carlos Condit, is set to face off against Martin Kampmann tomorrow night at UFC Fight Night 27. The fight is more than another step toward a second title shot, it is a shot at redemption for his first loss in the UFC some 4 years ago.

Coming into the UFC, Carlos Condit was riding an 8-fight winning streak. He had gone 5-0 in the WEC, winning the organization’s welterweight championship and successfully defending it three times. Then in April 2009, Condit made his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann, losing the contest in a split decision.
Now, some years and several fights later, the two are set to face each other one more time. Condit would go on to win his next 5 fights, earning himself the interim title in the process. He recently spoke with MMA Weekly to talk about his upcoming fight and how he feels entering the Octagon.
“It’s redemption in a sense,” he said about rematching Kampmann. “It was really disappointing dropping my UFC debut after having such a good run in the WEC. But it’s just another step in getting the UFC title belt back around my waist, and that’s really where I see myself in the near future.”
“It’s been phenomenal,” Condit said of training at the famed Jackson-Winkeljohn gym. “The great thing about Jackson’s is that we have so many resources. Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn are so, so good at what they do in the mixed martial arts game.
“They’re geniuses in a sense; then there’s specialists in individual disciplines. We have access to so many people and all over the world, and I think that is the reason why Jackson’s is so competitive at such a high level.”
As for Wednesday’s rematch against Kampmann, Condit believes he can only continue to improve.
“I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been, my skills are exactly where they need to be, I’m in a really good place mentally. Yeah, I would not want to fight me right now, that’s for sure.”
