BJPenn.Com Exclusive: Matt Brown on Mike Swick, Marriage, Title Shots & Being the Best Matt Brown

September 20, 2012 9:20 am by Bryan Levick

UFC welterweight Matt Brown has had a lot going on recently. He was married a few weeks ago and just got word that he will face Mike Swick at UFC on Fox 5 in December.

He took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about his upcoming fight and a few other topics prevalent in the world of MMA.

“Besides getting married, I am always training, that’s a given,” Brown told BJPenn.Com Radio. “I took a couple of weeks off for the wedding and I was actually on my honeymoon when I got the call to fight Swick. First day I got back into town I was back in the gym.”

The UFC knows when they book Brown to fight two things are going to happen. He’s going to show up and he’s going to go full bore. The man is known for being a warrior, entertaining and reliable. Brown is grateful for the opportunity to fight on such a high profile card surrounded by many of MMA’s top stars.

“I think it’s great to be on Fox, especially on the main card,” said Brown. “A lot of people will get an opportunity to see what I’m all about and I should be able to gain some new fans after the fight. Whether it’s some small Podunk show in the middle of nowhere or whether it’s on Fox, to me it’s all still a fight.”

“I don’t know if I can come up with words for it, I just take things day by day. I don’t think about how big things really are, but I’m sure I’ll look back at this one day and realize how amazing this opportunity is. At this time I just wake up every day, work as hard as I can and try to be the best fighter than I can be. I take it moment by moment, I’m not about to let all the fame or pressure get to me.”

The 31-year old native of Ohio has one focus and that is on Swick, but he is smart enough to know that this is a great opportunity for him to make some noise and make up for some of his past failures. He knows not to look too far in the future, but he has goals that he believes can be reached in the next few years.

“When we meet there will be fireworks coming out of me and he’ll be on the receiving end,” said The Immortal. “I mean that’s the plan at least I’m going to be ducking and dodging. Some people told me he didn’t look that great against DeMarques Johnson, but he was coming off a two and a half year layoff.”

“Every time I’ve tried to reach the next level I’ve failed, but I feel that this is my time. I think that this is my time to get beyond that next level. Within the next two or three years I’m going to hit my peak. I plan on going as far as I can. Hopefully that’s a championship and making GSP fight an actual fight and I can knock him out.”

The welterweight division is stacked with great fighters many of whom are ranked higher than the 15-11 Brown. With that being said Brown is looking to concentrate on things that are within his control. Fighting is a big part of his life, but it’s not his whole life. Holding a championship belt looks nice, but it’s not the end all be all.

“Right now I’m not thinking about title shots, I never really do. I don’t worry about rankings; I fight to be the best that I can be. I am a huge believer that just because you have the title doesn’t mean you’re the best in the world. That’s what I want to be, the best in the world. I’m honest with myself and I know I’m not in the title picture right now.”

“There are a lot of tough guys out there who I have to get past. In the next 2-3 years I’m going to be the best I’m ever going to be in my life. I want to be the best fighter I can be, the best father to my kids, the best husband to my wife and the best friend to my friends.”
