Bjorn Rebney Offers to Share New Glove Design with the UFC

Bellator MMA has been working on improving the MMA glove design, a piece of  equipment that many have considered long-overdue for an overhaul.

According to MMAjunkie, Bellator partnered with fitness equipment producer Everlast in order to make the new glove, which has been branded the “Powerlock MMA fight glove.” The glove is designed to better curve fighter’s hands, and offers padding that  supposedly greatly reduces the risk of hand injuries to its wearers.

“The hand injuries have gone down exponentially, and broken hands have gone down exponentially,” Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Guys who used to suffer the broken hands in the organization consistently, like (Douglas) Lima, who every time he’d throw one of those big overhand rights would end up in the hospital and have to get reconstructive surgery on his hand again, have no issues…It’s almost gone from this company, and it’s because of that glove technology.”

If Rebney’s claims of reduced hand injury are accurate, it could represent a major change in the MMA landscape, where broken hands have long-plagued fighters. Perhaps most surprising is Rebney’s willingness to share the glove design with other promotions, including the UFC.

“I would be willing to share these gloves and this technology with anybody – any small organization, the UFC, anybody who wants this technology,” Rebney said. “They should have it because it has absolutely changed the dynamic of guys breaking their hands in our organization…It’s shocking how cool it’s been in this company and for the most important thing we have, which is the fighters.”
