The UFC will return to Manchester, England with a clash of middleweights in Michael Bisping and Mark Munoz. The event will take place on October 26 at the Manchester Arena and will air on FOX Sports 2.
Both fighters have long sat near the top of the division, though neither man has been able to win the necessary fights to earn a shot at the title. It is likely, however, that this matchup could determine the top contender to face the winner of Anderson Silva-Chris Weidman at UFC 168.
Bisping (24-5) rose to the top of the middleweight division last year, but a KO loss to Vitor Belfort at UFC on FX 7 derailed his title aspirations. He returned to his winning ways in his last fight against Alan Belcher, a Technical Unanimous Decision following an accidental eye-poke in the third round. Ironically, it was Bisping who suffered a detached retina after the fight. The October fight will mark his return to action since his recent surgery.
Mark Munoz (13-3) followed a similar career trajectory. The “Filipino Wrecking Machine” went on a tear through opponents in 2010-2011, losing just once in 8 fights. He was then sidelined with a shoulder surgery, and he lost his return fight against now-middleweight-champion, Chris Weidman. One month ago, at UFC 162, Munoz fought Tim Boetsch in his first fight since the loss to Weidman nearly a year before. Against Boetsch, Munoz looked like the dominant wrestler of old, hopefully marking a return to title contention.
Though the UFC has not officially stated this fight is for the top-contender position, an impressive win for either fighter could put them in a fight with the winner of Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman’s rematch in December.
