Benson Asks For GSP Superfight, White Shuts him Down | UFC NEWS

Earlier this evening it was announced on UFC Tonight that current UFC Lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, had asked to face Welterweight champ, Georges St. Pierre, assuming both successfully defend their titles in their upcoming fights.  Unfortunately for Bendo, Dana White immediately shot down the idea.

“No, that’s not going to happen…” said White, “Ben Henderson, it’s not going to happen, he just won that title not too long ago.  There’s plenty of guys in the 155 pound division to defend the title defense, and a possible fight with Aldo, if Aldo moves up and stays at ’55.  A possible fight with Pettis a couple of fights away again… I don’t blame Ben Henderson for wanting to go to 170, that’s the big money fight.  The big money fight is Georges St. Pierre, everybody knows it.”

This is a new proposition in the cadre of potential superfights in the UFC, though it seems to be a long shot.  To build upon Dana White’s point, there are certainly big fights for both champions assuming they both beat their upcoming opponents.  For Henderson, Aldo and Pettis are two huge fights that have been building for some time.  Johnny Hendricks, Rory McDonald and several fighters from Strikeforce have been steadily climbing the ranks for a shot at the belt.  All of these fights, of course, come after their immediate match ups: Gilbert Melendez for Henderson and Nick Diaz for GSP.

While the notion of a superfight is intriguing, Dana White made clear that they will certainly not become the norm.  “There’s not going to be all this jumping around,” said White, confirming his stance that these fights are earned by definitively clearing out a division.

If both Henderson and GSP defend their belts successfully over the next couple years, of course, this match up could be a very intriguing one.  Both champions have an impressive mix of wrestling, grappling and striking abilities.  Henderson is a very large lightweight, measuring only one inch shorter than the Canadian St. Pierre.  The seed has been planted, and only time will tell if this superfight will come to fruition.
