Ben Askren Will Fight Rory MacDonald For Free, Retire If He Loses

Ben Askren, the free agent and former Bellator welterweight champion, is now up for grabs for the various MMA promotions, but Askren would prefer if he could fight in the UFC.

Askren has consistently pestered UFC President Dana White since being released by Bellator, but White has been against signing the former champion. “As far as the kid [Askren] and what kind of level he’s on, he barely beat Jay Hieron. He’s got some work to do and he can fight in another organization and work his way up,” White said.

Askren has other ideas, though, and said that he would be willing to fight in the UFC for free if he were to lose.

“Rory MacDonald is another guy that… really just bugs me and he irks me. It was really nice to see him get knocked off his pedestal on Saturday night, but, if Dana White were willing, if I lost to him [MacDonald], I would fight for free and retire from the sport of MMA because that’s how confident I am that I will beat Rory MacDonald,” Askren said. “I am not completely financially motivated. I obviously want to make a living, but, at the same time, I want to beat up the best guys in the world.

Askren added that Jay Heiron was added to the UFC’s roster after he beat Heiron, and said “after I beat Jay Hieron, they signed Jay Hieron, so clearly Jay Hieron was good enough to be in the UFC. Surely somebody who could beat him would be, also. Anthony Lapsley, who Jay Hieron choked out in the first round at Bellator was in the UFC last week, so obviously, there’s a few flaws with [White’s argument].
