Eye pokes have been a huge issue for the sport of MMA, but also an issue that’s extremely hard to alleviate. After all, how do you restrict a fighter’s fingers, without negating their ability to grapple?
Well, it looks like Bellator and Everlast might have solved the problem.
The “Powerlock” glove – a glove with a curved striking surface that aides proper hand form, along with redesigned foam and added padding for the first and fifth metacarpal (where hand injuries most commonly occur) – were a joint effort between the two companies. The gloves have debuted in competition, and so far the fighters who have used them have had nothing but great things to say about these “next generation” gloves.
Rampage Jackson, who used the new gloves to knock out Christian M’Pumbu at Bellator 110, had this to say (quotes via Bloodyelbow.com):
“I’ve been fighting for a long time, and have worn a lot of different gloves,” Jackson said. “When I put these new gloves on for the first time, you could feel the difference right away. The glove just feels perfect on your hands. Mo’s going to get a mouthful of these new gloves on May 17th, so I hope he likes them too.”
Bellator’s welterweight champion Douglas Lima, a fighter who has had his hand broken multiple times during Bellator’s 8th season, says that he feels as though his hand injuries are now a thing of the past, thanks to the Powerlock gloves.
“I guess I hit too hard, because I’ve broken my right hand three times, and I didn’t think it was ever going to end,” Lima said. “When I put on these new gloves for my recent title fight, I already felt better. I could tell it was going to add more protection and felt like it was designed just for me. It put me more at ease, and I walked out of that fight with the belt around my waist and my hands felt great. The Bellator team did a great job with these new gloves, and I’m so happy I get to keep wearing them every time I walk into the cage.”
It will be interesting to see if Dana White tries to get these gloves into the UFC, or if he decides to just stick with what he has, rather than passively admitting that Bellator figured out the glove issue before the UFC could.Bellator, Dana White, Douglas Lima, Gloves, mma, MMA NEWS, Powerlock Glove, quinton "rampage" jackson, ufc, ufc news
