Barnett Licensed For UFC 168 Pending UFC Sponsored WADA Testing

Heavyweight contender Josh Barnett (33-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC) has been cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to compete at UFC 168 taking place December 28, on the condition that he undergoes stringent WADA testing in order to remain eligible.

Officials overseeing the event today ordered the 35-year-old to submit to random tests leading up to the bout in order to qualify. “The Warmaster” has not competed in Nevada recently, last visiting the state against Pawel Nastula at PRIDE 32, where he submitted his opponent with a toe hold in the second round.

UFC 168 features former champion Anderson Silva facing off against the only fighter to ever best him in the Octagon, Chris Weidman, who took the strap with a second-round knockout at UFC 162 in July.

The terms laid out by the commission also included testing throughout the entirety of 2014 in order to maintain the ability to continue his presence in Nevada events. According to NSAC commissioner T.J. Lundvall, Josh will be “subjected to enhanced, intensive, weekly testing by the WADA lab at the expense of Mr. Barnett or UFC and that he also be subjected to random testing by the Nevada State Athletic Commission through Dec. 31, 2014 (also) to be paid by him or the UFC.”

Barnett was in attendance to recount his history of failed testing, one of which caused the former champion’s belt to be stripped after a victory over Randy Couture at UFC 36. The heavyweight contends he avoids most supplements as a consequence of previous results, aside from taking anything that he hasn’t personally selected.

“No one’s giving me anything under the table and putting things in my system. This is my responsibility,” he said at the meeting.

A test given to Barnett on October 15 came back negative, leading the commission to lighten up on their previous refusal to allow him to compete.

“I understand the prohibited list,” said Barnett, “And that’s what’s necessary.”

“The Warmaster” will take on Travis Browne on the UFC 168 pay-per-view, making this the second time he’s been featured on the main card since returning to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
