Authorities Question Police Officer Suspect In Luiz de Franca Murder

On March 23, the UFC will host UFC Fight Night 38 in Natal, Brazil for the highly anticipated rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and former PRIDE champion Dan Henderson as they hope to repeat the success of their last bout which won them “Fight of the Year” honors.

However, they can expect a dark cloud to hang over the event as tragedy has struck the MMA community in Natal.

Luiz de Franca (pictured), MMA fighter and teacher at Alta Performance Academia, was shot and killed at his gym on Monday.

Police officer Iranildo Felix who has been unable to justify his whereabouts on Monday, had a less than suitable alibi during his questioning according to Natal police chief Silvio Fernando. Chief Fernando gave his time to Globo to drop the story, however he did not state if charges have been filed.

Franca, only 25 years of age, was struck by a .40 caliber hand gun multiple times. The shooter is an expected ex-student that had recently been expelled due to excessive street fighting according to the famed Nova Uniao’s head trainer Andre Pederneiras.

Reports state that the former student came to the gym, fired multiple shots, and killed Franca almost instantly. The assailant then escaped with an accomplish on a motorcycle.

This tragedy has struck the MMA community hard. There is no doubt that a dark cloud hangs over Alta Performance Academia and the team at Nova Uniao.
