An ‘Honored’ Jon Jones Tweets That He Believes He Can Beat Anderson Silva

Though it is still too early to really talk about a match-up between UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, and light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, that fact has certainly not stopped either man from predicting how that super fight would end.  Surprisingly, both fighters seem to favor the younger Jones.

Anderson Silva, long recognized as the pound-for-pound greatest fighter, recently stated at a media luncheon that, “If I fight Jon Jones, I don’t think I’m going to win.  Jon Jones is different.  He’s large.  He’s young.  But, in the fight, I see in Jon Jones, I see myself from a long time ago.  He’s very smart.”

For Jones, words like these coming from one of the greatest fighters to ever live must surely provide a boost of confidence, if nothing else.  The young light heavyweight champion posted his response to Twitter earlier this week.

“Honored to hear the statements Silva made regarding a super fight [with] me earlier today.. Doesn’t change much, still working hard.”

In a response to a fan asking if Jones thought he could beat Silva, he stated, “I believe I am gifted and hard-working enough to pull out the victory against anyone.”

Despite both men’s predictions, Silva has since stated on “UFC Tonight” that he is not scared of fighting Jones.

“My opinion is this,” the middleweight champion clarified, “I’ll fight Jon Jones, all the guys from my class, all the guys that work in the UFC- all the fighters.  I respect all the fighters.  I respect Jon Jones… I’m not scared of Jon Jones, of Chris Weidman or whoever.  I’m here to fight.  That’s it.  It’s simple.”

All of this, however, remains mere speculation at this point.  Anderson Silva has to fight Chris Weidman this Saturday at UFC 162- an opponent many UFC fighters have picked to upset the champion- and Jones must fight the Swedish phenom, Alexander Gustafsson, at UFC 165 in September.  Assuming both champions successfully defend their titles, then we may be looking at the super fight of the century.
