Bellator lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez, is set to defend his title this year live on pay-per-view in a rubber match against his career nemesis, Michael Chandler.
News of the proposed matchup broke yesterday.
The rubber match has seemed inevitable for a while now, and it has now been confirmed. As he told Ariel Helwani, Eddie Alvarez is excited to get the chance to headline Bellator’s first PPV against his current rival Michael Chandler.
“I definitely want to headline a pay-per-view card, and we [now] get an opportunity to do that,” Alvarez said. “And what better way to do that than to have one of the best trilogies in MMA history?”
Chandler defeated Alvarez in their first match at Bellator 58 by rear naked choke in what was considered by many to be the best fight of 2011. Unfortunately it was overshadowed by another fight which happened on the same night; the epic battle between Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139.
After a year layoff due to contract disputes and court battles between Alvarez and Bellator, Alvarez returned to the Bellator cage at Bellator 106 and beat Chandler by split decision in yet another back-and-forth battle.
“Why not fight the guy three times, four times, five times? It’s a hell of a fight every time,” Chandler said.
