While ideally, UFC light heavyweight fighter Alexander Gustafsson (pictured) would like an immediate rematch against division champion, Jon Jones, it seems he will have to defeat one more opponent before that happens. And while the UFC is trying to figure out what to do next, Eric Del Fierro, coach at Alliance Training Center and former coach to Gustafsson, has a plan for what’s next for the 205-lb. division.

When the UFC announced light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ next fight, it left his last opponent, Alexander Gustafsson, in an enviable, if not ideal, situation: win one fight, and most likely rematch the champion next summer.
But with Jones facing Glover Teixeira, that leaves Gustafsson to find a top opponent to make sense. While the UFC will undoubtedly have its matchmaker Joe Silva and others working to make a set of potential bouts, head coach from Alliance MMA, Eric Del Fierro, thinks he has it all planned.
On UFC Tonight it was reported that Alliance “coach Eric Del Fierro… said in a perfect world he’d like Phil Davis to fight Gegard Mousasi next. For Alexander Gustafsson, he joked he’d like to fight Jon Jones again. Gustafsson would like to fight Ryan Bader or Antonio Rogerio Nogueira next.”
Of course, Ryan Bader already has his eyes on Anthony Perosh, his opponent for a December 7 UFC Fight Night in Australia.
Phil Davis is coming off a unanimous decision win over Lyoto Machida earlier this year, cementing his place in the division’s top three contenders.
While the Davis vs. Mousasi fight makes sense, a match-up between Davis and Gustafsson would also be appealing. Prior to Jones, Davis was the last person to defeat Gustafsson some three years ago. Ranked first and third in the division, it would be a true test for the number-one contender position.
Of course, neither I nor Del Fierro have the final say in this; and we will have to await the decision of UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.Tags: alexander gustafson, Alexander Gustafsson, antonio rogerio nogueira, Gegard Mousasi, jon jones, mma, MMA NEWS, phil davis, ryan bader, ufc, ufc news
