This was a great fight for the women’s division in the UFC. Both women brought a great pace into the fight and showcased just show exciting and technical their fights can be.
Davis came in as the favorite and looked like it to start the bout. She was controlling the pace and clinch but was taken down about mid-way through the first round. She slapped on a triangle-choke for a couple of minutes but was unable to finish the fight with the submission attempt and when Sexton came out of the triangle she landed some huge shots from the top that busted up the nose of Davis.
Davis answered in the second round with her superior grappling and control. Alexis landed several strikes and went for a couple of chokes in a dominant second round performance. Sexton was being beat down from behind while Alexis had a body-triangle but time ran out before Herb Dean could step in and stop the fight. We’ve learned that Sexton is one tough cookie.
The third round was an exciting back-and -forth battle that saw both women grapple and gain top position, reverse position, and land shots on top of each other. I think that Alexis Davis got the best of the grappling but Sexton definitely got the best of the strikes that landed. It was a close fight but Davis, with her high-level grappling, pulled out the unanimous decision
