| Speed. Speed. Speed.
It was no surprise that Moraga had trouble catching Johnson at the beginning of the fight. DJ was using his speed to stay at bay and landed a few clean jabs throughout the round. Moraga was finally able to close the space and get Johnson pinned against the fence. The plan backfired for him and Mighty Mouse ended up scoring the takedown and landing some good shots from the top, he transition through Moraga’s guard and then almost choked the challenger out against the cage with a standing guillotine to close the round. One round to the Champion.
The second round was much of the same as Johnson came out and actually got the better of the wrestling exchange by scoring two huge blast-double takedowns and did some smooth work from the top. He attempted a few different submission and continued his control throughout the round. He landed some good elbows from the top and was just one step ahead of Moraga in every scramble.
Again, the third round was completely dominated by the Champion, Mighty Mouse. He scored huge, explosive takedowns and again came very close to finishing Moraga with a kimura. But the toughness of Moraga helped him fight through and survive the round. John Moraga did have a couple bright spots in the round when he landed a nice knee, an uppercut, and when he escaped from the Johnson kimura attempt. This was again a round for the Champion but Moraga is still showing signs of life.
The championship rounds got a little interesting as Moraga was again being bested in the fourth round with the wrestling and ground game but then with about a minute left in the round Moraga clocked Johnson with a clean straight that busted the Champion’s nose open. Moraga tried to swarm DJ as he was backing off but was a little over zealous and again gave up a takedown at the close of the round.
The 5th and final round was owned by the Champion as he again took Moraga down and then gradually worked his way back to the kimura that he was working so hard for in the early rounds. When Moraga defended, Johnson transitioned from the kimura to an armbar and locked onto Moraga’s limb. Moments later Herb Dean stepped in as Johnson torqued Moraga’s elbow until it popped.
Demetrious Johnson Wins via Submission (Arm-Bar) in the 5th Round to successfully defend his UFC flyweight title.
Johnson put on an amazing performance and defeated a very game opponent in John Moraga. Moraga was getting beat by Johnson in almost every aspect of the fight but he never seemed to break or lose his composure. He continued to press forward, get up form the takedowns that Johnson was scoring, and he even busted the Champion up in the later rounds with some powerful striking. It was a great performance by both men and Johnson just seemed to be a step ahead of the Challenger, much like he has been throughout his reign as the flyweight title holder in the UFC.
Johnson is now 4-0 in the UFC flyweight division and has successfully defended his title twice. It will be interesting to see what the UFC decides to do with Johnson in his next title defense. The flyweight division is stacked with young and hungry talent so it probably wont be tough for the company to find another fitting opponent for the Champion.
Moraga is still going to be a top contender as well and gave Johnson an exciting and challenging fight. We’ll keep our eyes on Moraga as he is still a huge fight for any opponent.
