Chad Mendes’ speed, athleticism, and power led to a TKO of Clay Guida Saturday night at UFC 164: Henderson vs. Pettis 2 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wis
Early in the third round, Mendes clipped Guida with a right hand and then quickly took Guida’s back. Mendes then landed both hard lefts and rights and finished Guida 30 seconds into the third round.
The victory was the fourth straight KO for Mendes, who improved to 15-1.
“That was a goal of mine coming into the fight,” Mendes said. “I needed to make a statement. I want that title shot, I want Jose Aldo, and I want that belt.”
The loss dropped Guida to 30-14.
In the second round, Mendes pulled off a nice sprawl on a takedown attempt and took Guida’s back just before the three minute mark and landed a nice knee once back to their feet.
Mendes’ speed led to taking Guida’s back at the two minute mark. He pushed Guida against the cage and landed a nice knee.
Near the 3-minute mark of the first round, Mendes shook off a Guida takedown attempt and sank in a guillotine but Guida was able to scramble free.
