MMA NEWS – Female Champ Cyborg Reveals That ZUFFA Has Asked Her To Drop To 135 Pounds

“I signed the contract for these four fights after UFC purchased Strikeforce, so I guess they’ll keep us, they’ll keep the female divisions and female MMA keeps growing and growing, and I guess they’re keeping the girls and it depends on what we do to call UFC’s attention. As of right now there] are still two weight divisions: 135lbs and 145lbs.”

“It’s already hard for me to drop to 145lbs, I gotta work a lot and they’re thinking about one division only. They asked me if I could do it. I can try; it’s not impossible. Let’s see… I guess that in the future there’ll be some news. It’ll be hard because I got a lot of weight to lose, but it’d be good because I could fight more. I guess it’s important to keep active, it’s my job, so I’ll try it to stay here.”

Brazilian media outlet, Tatame.com recently sat down with the most feared female fighter on the planet to get an update on what’s going on with her career.

When Cyborg stepped on the world stage back in 2008 for EliteXC she struck fear in the hearts of all Gina Carano fans worldwide. She brought in a level of skill and violence not yet seen in women’s MMA and she has been doing so ever since.

The problem that Cyborg is having is that the female divisions (145 and 135 pounds) are not deep with talent and as such she doesn’t have a single fighter peaking through the contender ladder that is a sufficient challenge or threat to her title.

After failed contract negotiations kept her out of action for a year, the Strikeforce Queen is ready to return to action and has finally reached a four-fight agreement with her promotional home.

However who shall she fight? And if the brass at Strikeforce make her drop to 135 pounds what does that mean for the reigning Meisha Tate? Will she be forced to get brutalized by Cyborg due to a lack of depth and merged divisions?

Thoughts?

  1. steve says:

who cares. they should just have cyborg join mens mma and do away with the rest of the women.

    • spiritsplice says:

Good idea, have her fight Torres or Faber, see how good she really is.

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I bet she’d kick both their asses.

        • THE INUK says:

lmfao REAL TALK,,, maybe not Faber but I could see her ko’n torres LOL

        • GET RID OF FITCH says:

Yeah i think Cyborg would stomp that little kid faber like noones business. He’s only liek 5’2 0r 5’3′ and she’s 5’8″ and way stronger and way better standup. I do agree with the guy up top that Cyborg should only fight men and (BOYS) like faberism. She has more male chromosones than most men and with the amount of steroids she’s done in her life she has no busines fighting woman except maybe Julia Budd who is just as much of a HE-MAN steroid freak. I would however love to see Rhonda Rousey ripp one of Cyborgs arms off like she did that FREAK/ROIDER Julia Budd. If anymore of these half/man half woman keep coming into womans MMA they are going to need to have a different class for them to fight in. I don’t know Sarah kaufmann quite manly herself. Tate, Rousey, ??? girl tate took title from are really some of the only TRUE 100% girls in the sport. You see alot of those halfies bull dikes in womans softball to.

  2. GRT 3000 says:

lol, steve beat me to the comment. that was my first thought; who cares!?

    • GRT 3000 says:

yeah whatever. I don’t care about it, doesn’t mean that others feel the same right Forty? I apologize, didn’t mean to upset you.

  3. Nick Diaz says:

Yeah she looks like a pig at 145. Lol. Let her fight Jose Aldo.

  4. kamikazee says:

You guys are all assholes. Wmma may not have the depth of talent that the men’s divisions do, but with the fighters they do have there is some great talent and potential for amazing fights. Stop living in your stupid testosterone filled bubble and give the women the respect they deserve. Jesus, the ignorance of people is beyond me….

  5. tom23 says:

Unless it’s the women’s world cup in soccer… female sports will never garner that much attention. Women’s mma is doomed to have the same fate as women’s boxing, hardly seen, hardly heard, hardly there.

    • Shawn says:

That’s only because it was never promoted. You can make anything huge, with the right promotion. There are plenty of fans (including males) that enjoy watching women fight. I’d put money down on any of these pro mma women fighters taking on any regular joe blow out there. Most of these chicks can throwdown, and better than your average guy. I’ll even go as far as your average guy who does some training.

    • Xaninho says:

women’s soccer sucks ass man…It’s a freakin’ world cup and any 14 year old boys team would crush them. So the attention for women’s soccer isn’t that great i can assure you….

      • tom23 says:

Obviously, but this past world cup got so much coverage.. truth be told, I see more technical fighting in women’s mma than most male fights, but it still lacks something, I wouldn’t want to watch an all womens card that is for sure.

  6. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Give her Ronda Rousey! The good thing about this dearth of talent is that the female competitors can travel between bantam and feather weight divisions to get the matches they seek. I want to see a rematch between her and Gina Carano but I think she retired herself after that beat down. Here is a crazy idea, if she wants that Gina Carano money she should hold both weight classes belts.

  7. Matt says:

I’m sorry, but womens mma does not sit right with me.

  8. Shawn says:

As much as I like watching the women fight, based on historical acquisitions of the UFC and Dana not being a fan of women fighting in the UFC, I think it’s just Zuffa’s way of dwindling down the Strikeforce roster and riding out all the remaining contracts. I really do hope that Dana changes his mind about women’s MMA. It can only draw in more revenue.

    • phace says:

I actually think it’s the opposite. It looks like they’re trying to strengthen the numbers for women’s MMA division by division so they can have a chance to enter the UFC.

  9. io31 says:

Lol @ comments comparing him to male fighters. You guys seem to have some serious confidence issues. Don’t feel intimidated … homie…

  10. Anthony1994 says:

I’ve only seen a few female MMA fights and I think the skill level is much lower, It’s not as enjoyable but as the female sport of MMA grows so will the interest and hopefully mean more fighters and more skillful fighters.
I don’t see females in the UFC anytime soon because it would put a lot of new audiences off IMO as females fighting is not often seen. However once the UFC has established a large enough fan base and following then there may be a chance female MMA could succeed in the UFC.

  11. Omar says:

cyborg already cuts a lot of weight 4 145 i doubt she can make 135

  12. fat bastard behind computer says:

I bet she would whoop any of you guys on here all day one after another. It would be a muay thai, jiu jitsu, wrestling clinic on you lazy bastards talking smack. Instead of talking bad about someone else go better yourself im sure your not perfect either.

  13. DOC SANTOS says:

Change the weights for the weight divisions. And add a heavier division. Boom. Done.

  14. SanSooRob says:

They need get some hot chicks or its just going be like WNBA

  15. Xaninho says:

Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousy are kinda hot, so they’re on their way with that..

Now ofcourse the quality level of female MMA isn’t going to be anywhere near the level of the men’s MMA, but that’s ok. We do enjoy watching TUF don’t we? These guys haven’t reached the top level either, but it’s still entertaining fights…

We should have women’s TUF with showercams lol!

  16. DevonAK86 says:

Give her Ronda The arm collector Rousey and im sure she will lose her arm!

  17. This guy says:

IF they decied to have 135 only then we wont ever see Gina Carano figth again, she can barley make 145 as it is.

  18. Mike Diaz says:

Those two weight division, imo, are the average weight a female fighter should be. I think the reasoning behind removing the FW division would be to create more potential match ups since the woman’s side lacks depth. How about a BW Grand Prix? Or is woman’s MMA not a big enough draw? Carano, Tate, Cyborg, Rousey, Coennen….sounds like an interesting Royal Rumble! LOL TEAM PENN!!!!!

  19. jbeamazing says:

is there really that many fans of girl mma??????????? nope!

  20. mick says:

ronda rouseyyyyyyyy would match up good against cyborg….and amanda nunes comfortable at 145 could possibly be a good battle

  21. Brian B says:

I think its pretty obvious that the UFC is basically sending her the message to get off the roids!

  22. jon says:

she can not even beat ronda rousey rousey would break her arm

  23. Andrew Dames says:

She should aim for rousey that would be a good match & her vs Aldo she will get killed & if she fights faber she will get choked out so stop with the women vs men bullshit!
