The 38-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champion and UFC heavyweight tournament champion has been a pioneer to the sport of mixed martial arts. With his first UFC fight taking place all the way back on Feb. 7, 1997, Belfort has been a very relevant fighter and remains so to this day.

“The Phenom” surprised many with a recent announcement on his Facebook page that many die-hard fans may not have even known regarding his scholarly background. Befort proudly announced that he has been accepted into the very prestigious school, Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Befort’s Facebook post read:

“É com muito orgulho que venho contar a vocês que fui aceito em Stanford, uma das principais universidades de ensino e pesquisa do mundo. Aprendi que educação e esporte são a base para qualquer pessoa, mas educação sem dúvida vem em 1º. Nunca é tarde p/ vc realizar o que sempre sonhou, basta acreditar e trabalhar duro p/ isso!!! #teambelfort #20anosdemmanotopo #familiabelfort // I am very proud to announce that Stanford has accepted me to join them. I have learned that education and sport are the foundation for everyone, but education comes in the 1st place. Never is too late to achieve your dreams. You just need to work hard and believe in yourself #teambelfort”

“The Phenom” did not say whether he would be taking up the acceptance to Stanford and enrolling in classes, but the acceptance alone is something very few MMA fighter’s can also claim.

Belfort has a scheduled fight with Ronaldo Souza at UFC 198 on May 14th in Brazil.
