UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is currently on the sidelines as he prepares for the upcoming birth of his child. Despite the champ champ taking time off from the Octagon, he has continued to find his name in headlines as talks of a potential boxing superfight with Floyd Mayweather have continued to surface.
To kick off the year, Mayweather offered McGregor $15 million to step into the ring with him. While McGregor didn’t respond to the offer, UFC President Dana White was quick to fire back as he countered Mayweather’s offer, offering the undefeated boxer $25 million to fight. Mayweather of course fired back and laughed at White’s offer, reiterating that he wouldn’t fight for less than $100 million.
Despite that, in a recent pay-per view interview, McGregor expressed his desire to make the fight official, saying:
“I have my eyes on one thing, and that’s Floyd Mayweather,” McGregor said (transcribed by The Mac Life). “Me and Floyd have got together and figure it out the same way him and Manny [Pacquiao] figured it out. Once we come to a set number that I’m happy with, he’s happy with, then we go to the customers, we go to the promoters, the buyers. And then we get it done.
“That fight is more than just being explored. That fight’s been in the works for a while now. There’s a lot of steps to get done, there’s a lot of things to get done, but it’s the fight to make.”
“I believe it will happen by the end of this year, or early next year.”
Mayweather was quick to release a statement responding to McGregor, saying that he too would be on board with attempting to make a fight official.
