Valentina Shevchenko vs. Amanda Nunes in the works for July, no official date set

A women’s bantamweight title fight between top contender Valentina Shevchenko and current champion Amanda Nunes is being targeted for July.

BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor spoke with Shevchenko’s management who stated that the title fight is in the works for the month of July but that no date has been set by the promotion.

This past weekend Taylor reported that the Shevchenko vs. Nunes rematch was in the works for UFC 213 on July 8, this as per a source. However, Tiger Muay Thai was quick to shutdown the report stating that the source was not affiliated with the gym and thus not credible.

Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko first met on the main card of UFC 196 in March of 2016.

“The Lioness” was able to get the better of Shevchenko in the first two rounds of their UFC 196 fight before “The Bullet” came surging back in round three.

In the end, Shevchenko’s late surge proved to be to little to late as Nunes was awarded the decision victory from the judges in attendance.

Amanda Nunes was most recently seen inside the octagon at this past December’s UFC 207 event in Las Vegas where she successfully defended her women’s bantamweight title by earning a first-round TKO victory over former champ Ronda Rousey in the evening’s main event.

The victory served as Nunes fifth in a row as she had previously scored wins over Shayna Baszler, Sara McMann, Valentina Shevchenko and most recently Miesha Tate.

“The Lioness” has gone 14-4 overall in her mixed martial arts career. Amanda’s most recent loss occurred at UFC 178 in September of 2014 to former title challenger Cat Zingano by way of TKO.

Meanwhile, Valentina Shevchenko was most recently seen in action in the main event of UFC on FOX 23 this past January in Denver where she scored a second-round submission victory over surging division contender Julianna Pena.

“The Bullet” has gone 7-1 over her past eight fights with her lone loss in that time coming to Amanda Nunes via decision at UFC 196 in March of 2016.

Prior to her submission victory over Pena, Shevchenko outstruck former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm on route to a unanimous decision victory in the main event of UFC on FOX 20 in Chicago.
