Tony Ferguson calls out UFC for major mistake on UFC 216 billboard

By Tom Taylor - September 3, 2017

On October 7, in the main event of the stacked UFC 216, streaking lightweight contender Tony Ferguson will battle Kevin “The Motown Phenom” Lee for interim lightweight gold. According to a massive billboard Ferguson recently encountered, however, his fight with Lee will actually be for interim featherweight gold.

Quick, somebody tell featherweight champ Max Holloway!

“Based on this I’ve got some weight to cut,” Ferguson said of this billboard screw-up on Twitter. “UFC, lightweight not featherweight.”

Though Ferguson was initially expected to battle undefeated Dagestani contender Khabib Nurmagomedov for interim lightweight gold, that honor instead went to Lee. Ferguson will enter this fight on a ridiculous nine-fight win-streak, which is highlighted by wins over Danny Castillo, Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau, Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, Lando Vannata, and most recently, former champion Rafael Dos Anjos. The dangerous lightweight contender has not fought since November of 2016, as his planned March scrap with Khabib Nurmagomedov was cancelled at the last minute.

Lee, meanwhile, is on a solid streak of his own, having won his last five. Since succumbing to strikes from Leonardo Santos in 2015, he’s defeated Efrain Escudero, Jake Matthews, Magomed Mustafaev, Francisco Trinaldo and most recently, Michael Chiesa.
