Thompson recently spoke with BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor and gave an update on his plans for his next fight. “Wonderboy” mentioned that either Carlos Condit or Robbie Lawler are the two fighters that he is hoping to book for his next competition in hopes of earning his way to another shot at the UFC welterweight title.

With Gunnar Nelson’s recent win over Alan Jouban, Nelson’s coach John Kavanagh campaigned for a fight between the two karate specialists but Thompson wasn’t all that interested in the fight with Nelson who is currently ranked #9 in the official UFC rankings.

Stephen’s father and coach, Ray Thompson recently spoke with MMA Latest News on their plans for what should come next.

“Coach Kavanagh is looking to jump past all the other fighters in the rankings,” said Ray Thompson.
“That’s all he’s trying to do. We’d try to do the same thing I suppose. Well, actually we wouldn’t and didn’t.”

Ray continued on saying that they are not calling out any fighters in particular for a match, but if given his choice of who they could pick to fight, Ray mentioned the same opponents as Stephen but did add one more interesting name to the list.

“We are not ones for calling people out, but in terms of people who I would like Stephen to fight next, preferably someone in the top five,” Thompson said. “Maybe Condit. He’s def a stud and will come to fight. Lawler is a beast and will fight no matter what.”

“I think the best fight would be between Wonderboy and Nick Diaz. Nick ain’t scared and will def bring hell in a hand basket. We’ve got a lot of respect for these men and would be honored to step in the Octagon with either of them.”
