Stephen Thompson: “What else do I have to do for a title shot?”

By Chris Taylor - July 3, 2016

Following his recent victory over former title challenger Rory MacDonald, top welterweight contender Stephen Thompson is still awaiting word on what his next from the UFC.

“Wonderboy” has reeled off seven straight victories, including a first-round knockout of former champion Johny Hendricks this past February.

Thompson spoke to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour where he said that he is concerned that hey may not get the winner of this month’s Woodley vs. Lawler title fight at UFC 201:

“Will I be the first one in line for that shot? I haven’t heard anything yet, man,” Thompson said on a recent edition of The MMA Hour. “What else do I have to do? I feel like i have done enough to deserve that title shot, more than the guy whose fighting for it now.”

Word that former champ Georges St. Pierre may return to the octagon is another reason that Thompson feels he has not been told that the title shot is his:

“They did promise [Woodley] a fight,” Thompson said. “Kudos to the UFC for doing what they said they were going to do. But man, after that what’s going to happen? There’s word that GSP is coming back, if you’re just looking for that one big money fight, if he’s coming back to the welterweight division.”
