Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt made his flyweight debut against Kai Kara-France at tonight’s UFC 269 event. Garbrandt (12-5 MMA) had made the decision to test the waters at 125lbs following his unanimous decision loss to Rob Font back in May. That setback was Cody’s fourth in his past five fights, with three of those defeats coming via knockout.

O’Malley (15-1 MMA) entered tonight’s contest on a two-fight winning streak, his most previous being a lopsided beatdown of a very durable Kris Moutinho. ‘Suga’ had suffered his lone career defeat back in August of 2020, when he was TKO’d by Chito Vera.

Former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz returns to the Octagon at tonight’s UFC 269 event for a bout with Pedro Munhoz. Cruz (23-3 MMA) returns for the first time since March’s UFC 259 event, where he scored a split decision victory over Casey Kenney. The win had snapped a two-fight losing skid for ‘The Dominator’, as Cruz had suffered previous setbacks to Henry Cejudo and Cody Garbrandt respectively.

Strickland (24-3 MMA) was slated to compete against former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold last month at UFC 268. Unfortunately for fight fans, ‘Rocky’ was forced to pullout of the contest due to injury and Sean was removed from the card.

According to Curtis, that fight was against Andre Muniz at UFC 269, but it never came to fruition, but days later he got the fight offer to face Allen.

In the lead-up to UFC 269, there has been talk of Dustin Poirier retiring should he win the belt, and his coach, Phil Daru says that could happen. Daru, Poirier’s strength and conditioning coach, says any decision “The Diamond” has made hasn’t been talked about. Instead, everyone in the camp knows Poirier could very well retire after UFC 269 but he hopes he decides to defend the belt or move up to welterweight. However, if he decides to retire, Daru says he won’t be mad at Poirier at all.

Over the course of the last twelve months we’ve seen Sean Strickland emerge as a real contender of note in the middleweight division. With five straight wins and victories over Brendan Allen, Krzysztof Jotko and Uriah Hall to his name, it’s expected that Strickland will get a major opponent in 2022 after his scheduled bout with Luke Rockhold fell through.
