Miesha Tate explains how trash talk can be counterproductive for fighters

Tom Taylor - October 18, 2019

These days, more and more fighters are using trash talk to promote themselves and their fights. Former UFC bantamweight champion Miesha Tate understands why this happens, but believes fighters should think twice before ramping up the verbal warfare. Speaking to BJPENN.com ahead of last weekend’s ONE: Century card, Tate explained how trash talk and bravado can sometimes end up being more damaging to a fighter’s career than helpful. If a fighter talks a big game and fails to back it up, then their brand can take a huge, often irrecoverable hit.

Miesha Tate says Cris Cyborg was 'humanized' during UFC run

Fernando Quiles - August 12, 2019

Miesha Tate looks back on Cris Cyborg’s UFC run as the time the unstoppable force met her match. Cyborg had long been regarded as the most dominant female in mixed martial arts history. She pummeled Gina Carano back in Aug. 2009 to leave no doubt as to who the Strikeforce queen was. While she never got a chance to face Ronda Rousey, Cyborg’s dominance lasted longer than Rousey’s. This of course includes Cyborg’s battles outside the UFC, as Rousey had a longer title reign within the world’s most recognized MMA promotion.

Covington served as a guest on the MMA Tonight show hosted by former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate and Ryan McKinnell. Things got ugly as Covington accused Tate of talking behind his back. McKinnell intervened, firing off verbal jabs on the UFC Newark ratings and Covington called the pair “jobbers.”

Miesha Tate gives interesting perspective on Cris Cyborg's loss to Amanda Nunes

Tom Taylor - January 25, 2019

After more than a decade of dominance, UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg’s reign came to a shocking end at UFC 232, when she was knocked out by reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes in just over a minute. In the opinion of former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, Cyborg’s shocking loss to Amanda Nunes can be attributed to the fact that she didn’t stick to her strategy. That being said, Tate feels Cyborg has never really needed a strategy before, so she can’t exactly be faulted for that mistake.

Tom Taylor - August 31, 2018

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will no longer be training at JacksonWink MMA. Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show this week, Cerrone explained why, citing a growing distaste for the Albuquerque gym’s coaching staff, and the fact that they agreed to train his upcoming opponent “Platinum” Mike Perry.  This very public falling out between Cerrone and JacksonWink has the MMA community divided. Some fans and pundits are siding with the gym, while others are steadfastly on team Cowboy. File former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate into the latter category.
