Former featherweight champion Max Holloway squared off with perennial contender Yair Rodriguez in today’s UFC Vegas 42 main event. Holloway (23-6 MMA) was returning to action for the first time since laying a beating on Calvin Kattar back in January. That win was of course preceded by back-to-back losses to reigning featherweight champ Alex Volkanovski.

Conor McGregor obviously tuned in to watch his former opponent Max Holloway take on Yair Rodriguez in today’s UFC Vegas 42 main event. McGregor (22-6 MMA) and Holloway (23-6 MMA) of course have a history. The pair met at featherweight way back in April of 2013, with ‘Notorious’ emerging victorious by way of unanimous decision.

The Octagon returned to Nevada for today’s UFC Vegas 42 event, an eleven-bout fight card headlined by Max Holloway vs. Yair Rodriguez. The main event proved to be a thrilling five round war. Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez got after it right from the opening bell and didn’t stop trading strikes until the horn sounded to end their twenty-five minute affair. Although ‘El Pantera’ found success by landing a plethora of heavy kicks, it was the pace, takedowns and volume of punches from ‘Blessed’ that proved to be the determining factor in the decision.

The official weigh-ins for UFC Vegas 42 took place on Friday in Las Vegas, and 20 of the 22 fighters scheduled to compete have made weight. In the main event, both headliners in Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez successfully made weight for their featherweight bout. Holloway stepped onto the scale at 146lbs while Rodriguez was 145.5lbs, so the UFC Vegas 42 main event is now official.

It was McGregor’s second UFC fight while it was Holloway’s sixth and dropped him to 3-3. After that loss, however, the Hawaiian went on a 13-fight winning streak including winning and defending the featherweight belt.

The promotion gave Holloway an immediate rematch, but he lost a controversial split decision at UFC 251 last summer to Volkanovski. Poirier ended up winning by first-round submission but they then rematched in 2019 at UFC 236 for the interim lightweight title. Holloway was the reigning featherweight champ and Poirier was a top contender and it was “The Diamond” who won a decision.
