UFC strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk weighs in on Nunes vs. Rousey

By Tom Taylor - December 23, 2016

In one weeks’ time, women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes will make the first defense of her title. She will do so against former champion Ronda Rousey, who has not been seen in action since she was knocked out by a Holly Holm head kick in November of 2015.

In advance of this fight, fans, pundits and fellow fighters are divided on who they think will come out on top. Some picture Rousey reclaiming the throne with a vintage victory. Others imagine Nunes mauling the long absent Rousey to retain the title. Others are unwilling to make a prediction one way or the other.

You can include UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in this latter category. Jedrzejczyk, who now trains alongside Nunes at American Top Team, but also has a friendship with Rousey, was unwilling to pick a winner when asked to do so by MMAJunkie.com.

“I don’t like to give predictions for everyone,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Of course I am teammates with Amanda Nunes, but I’ve had longer relationship with Ronda Rousey. She deserves to fight for this title right after she lost to Holly Holm. It’s been a while, more than a year, where she’s been out of the competition, but I’m very happy for her. I’m very happy for Ronda. I’m happy for Amanda because she can defend the title against one of the best athletes ever.”

While Jedrzejczyk was unwilling to make a prediction, she did admit she considers this fight a tough one for both women.

“I think it’s going to be very difficult fight for both of them, but both of them are very, very strong,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Not just physically, but mentally as well. I don’t know who is going to win this fight but I will be watching.”
