Robert Whittaker clarifies coach's GSP comparison, admits reluctance to fighting former champ

Robert Whittaker’s longtime jiu-jitsu coach Alex Prates recently said his pupil is a better version of Georges St-Pierre. “Maybe you’ll see Robert Whittaker using a style that I think is the one that suits him better but he never really needed it because it was always comfortable for him on the feet for most of his fights,” Prates told MMA Fighting, discussing Whittaker’s looming showdown with Israel Adesanya. “With Yoel Romero, for example, it would have been stupid to try to take him down. But Robert has great wrestling and great timing. I honestly think Robert is a better version of GSP. And we might see this now.”

While many have called for Tony Ferguson to be the next matchup for lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, UFC President Dana White has another opponent in mind if “El Cucuy” doesn’t make it to a fight with the champion. In an interview with TMZ Sports, White said that Ferguson is next in line, despite the fact that there have been four previous booking attempts that have failed between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov.

Given that streaking UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson has irrefutably earned a lightweight title shot, talk of a potential Nurmagomedov vs. St-Pierre fight has been met with quite a bit of backlash. The good news for fans who want to see Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson next, however, is that St-Pierre himself believes this is the way it should happen.

Despite an admirable effort, Bisping was ultimately dropped and submitted by his Canadian foe in the waning moments of the third round. Speaking to MMA Junkie during a promotional tour for his new autobiography, Quitters Never Win, Bisping revealed that his performance in this fight was hindered by a rib injury, and claimed that he’d defeat St-Pierre in a rematch.
