UFC featherweight champ Cris Cyborg discusses options in other promotions

Tom Taylor - August 10, 2018

UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has not fought since her first-round mauling of Yana Kunitskaya in March. Since then, she’s been angling for a fight with women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, but the fight still hasn’t come together, and it doesn’t seem like it will until at least December. To say that Cris Cyborg is getting tired of waiting would be an understatement.

Cris Cyborg is down to lose to Ronda Rousey in WWE

Thomas Taylor - August 8, 2018

For a time, one of the biggest super fights possible in MMA was one pitting former Strikeforce and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey against former Strikeforce, Invicta, and now UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg. Regrettably, this fight never came together, and now that Rousey is firmly embedded in the pro wrestling world, it almost certainly never will. That said, Cyborg would still like to compete with Rousey. In fact, she’d even be willing to meet Rousey in the WWE ring — even if the pro wrestling organization wanted her to lose the match.

Tom Taylor - August 1, 2018

UFC featherweight Cris Cyborg wanted to fight bantamweight Amanda Nunes at UFC 228 in Dallas, but that’s not happening. Instead, Nunes wants the fight to occur at UFC 232 in December, some nine months after Cyborg’s last fight. Cyborg isn’t happy about this.

Tom Taylor - July 29, 2018

The UFC has been trying to book a women’s featherweight super fight between reigning divisional champion Cris Cyborg and bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes for months. Unfortunately, the promotion has not been able to nail the fight down as of yet. Speaking earlier this weekend in the buildup to UFC on FOX 30 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, UFC President Dana White gave a promising update on this much discussed super fight.

Cris Cyborg believes Amanda Nunes fight will be her last in the UFC

Tom Taylor - July 15, 2018

UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg was hoping her super fight with bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes would occur at UFC 228 this September 8. Regrettably, Nunes turned this date down, and the UFC is now working on the fight for UFC 232 on December 29. This is not ok with Cyborg, who has not fought since March, when she mauled Yana Kunitskaya to a first-round stoppage. The featherweight champ is simply not interested in enduring long layovers of this length.

Report | Holly Holm vs Ketlen Vieira possible for an interim title if Amanda Nunes challenges Cris Cyborg

Drake Riggs - July 12, 2018

With the possibility of yet another super fight on the horizon…this time in the women’s divisions, it presents an opening for the UFC to grant another interim crown. A super fight between the UFC’s featherweight and bantamweight champions has been on the minds of many fans and pundits alike. Dating back to around the beginning of 2018 when UFC 219 concluded with featherweight queen Cris Cyborg defending her title successfully against a former 135-pound champion in Holly Holm.

Cris Cyborg agrees to potential bout with Amanda Nunes for UFC 228

Drake Riggs - July 11, 2018

From the biggest super fight between men in MMA to the biggest super fight between women? It certainly appears to be a possibility. In the early stages of UFC 226’s coming together, it was looking like there was a possibility for the card to be the “super fight card” by playing host to three epic champion encounters.

Amanda Nunes nunes calls for fight with Holly Holm, Cris Cyborg joins conversation

Tom Taylor - June 10, 2018

Former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm was the picture of dominance in her UFC 225 main card featherweight battle with Megan Anderson, showing off a rarely seen but extremely impressive ground game en route to a lopsided unanimous decision win. With this victory, Holm effectively established herself as the number-one contender at both featherweight and bantamweight. She’s one of the only options available for featherweight champ Cris Cyborg, and one of the few top bantamweights left that bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes has not yet fought. It really seems to come down to which division she’d prefer to fight for the title in first.

Cris Cyborg thinks UFC wants rematch with Holly Holm, will fight with Amanda Nunes after

Drake Riggs - May 28, 2018

Everyone has their eyes on a big super fight these days it seems. And UFC women’s featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg is no different. Cyborg is unbeaten in the UFC(5-0) and has racked up two title defenses since officially becoming the champion in July 2017 when she defeated Invicta FC bantamweight champion, Tonya Evinger.

Cris Cyborg gives her take on upcoming Holly Holm vs. Megan Anderson showdown

Tom Taylor - April 13, 2018

UFC 225, which goes down on June 9 in beautiful Chicago, Illinois, looks like an early frontrunner for 2018’s Card of the Year. One of the latest additions to this absolutely stacked card is a women’s featherweight showdown between former Invicta featherweight champ Megan Anderson, and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm. Given that there is only a handful of fighters in the UFC women’s featherweight division, it should come as no surprise that this newly announced matchup is of particular interest to divisional champ Cris Cyborg. Speaking to Amy Kaplan of Fansided, Cyborg gave her take on this matchup. While she isn’t surprised that the UFC put the fight together, she also doesn’t seem sure it was the right fight to make.

Cris Cyborg Believes Amanda Nunes is Just Using Her Name as Promotion Now

Justin Golightly - March 15, 2018

The superfight has been put on hold, Cris Cyborg eradicated her last foe, and Amanda Nunes has a title defense at UFC 224. Both women are down to meet up after their business is finished, but now Cyborg thinks Nunes isn’t actually going to end up showing her face in the Octagon and has just been asking for the fight to promote herself. If Nunes doesn’t fight Cyborg at UFC 226, then she says that the UFC bantamweight champ will have to get to the back of the line of featherweight. We’d tell you who that would be behind, but the division still doesn’t exist on the UFC website. “I’m starting to think that Amanda Nunes just started using my name to negotiate a new deal with the UFC. Like many other girls, she’s using my name to create her brand. If Amanda is not ready to fight at UFC 226 in Las Vegas, I have to tell my team that I want to fight whoever is ready. I explained to my manager that if Amanda wins in Rio and refuses to fight in July, I will not invest my time trying to carry out this fight.”

Coach Jason Parillo believes Holly Holm was tougher test for Cris Cyborg than Amanda Nunes

Tom Taylor - March 7, 2018

Having demolished short-notice challenger Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222 last weekend, UFC women’s featherweight champ Cris Cyborg now has her crosshairs set on bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. And while this potential showdown is considered the toughest test of Cyborg’s career by many fans, her boxing coach Jason Parillo believes it’s actually a perfect stylistic matchup. “The person who is going to beat Cris Cyborg is Cris Cyborg, or [she retires],” Parillo told MMAJunkie this week. “Time catches up to all of us. But for the most part, Cris Cyborg, I don’t see it. Amanda Nunes, she doesn’t have a – she has a good style. She’s a good fighter with the way she took out Ronda [Rousey], but she’s got a style that’s absolutely perfect for Cris. Cris is going to fight her fight and go out there and do what she does and get it done.”

Tom Taylor - March 5, 2018

After watching UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg maul Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222 last weekend, Chael Sonnen believes he’s identified some glaring holes in her game. Sonnen broke it down in the latest episode of Beyond the Fight, and implored Cyborg’s potential future opponents to listen.

MMA community reacts to Cris Cyborg's execution of Yana Kunitskaya

Tom Taylor - March 4, 2018

Though UFC 222 was originally expected to be headlined by a men’s featherweight title fight between champ Max Holloway and challenger Frankie Edgar, a late Holloway injury meant that the card was ultimately topped by a women’s featherweight title fight between champ Cris Cyborg and challenger Yana Kunitskaya. While Yana Kunitskaya deserves props for taking a fight with the monstrous Cyborg on short notice – and for landing a takedown early in the fight – this fight went as expected. After returning to her feet, Cyborg began to stalk her opponent like a hungry carnivore. From there, it was just a matter of time. The champ was feasting on her latest kill before the first round was over.
