To start 2017, talks of a potential McGregor Mayweather boxing match have continued to dominate headlines as the pair have continued to go back and forth in regards to a potential showdown.
To start the year, Mayweather made Conor McGregor and offer of $15 million to box him, which was quickly countered by UFC President Dana White, who offered Mayweather $25 million to take the fight against McGregor. Mayweather laughed off the offer, calling White a comedian and reiterating that he wouldn’t fight for less than $100 million.
While McGregor initially remained silent on the matter, he recently spoke in a pay-per view interview to explain how the fight can be made official, saying:
“I have my eyes on one thing, and that’s Floyd Mayweather,” McGregor said (transcribed by The Mac Life). “Me and Floyd have got together and figure it out the same way him and Manny [Pacquiao] figured it out. Once we come to a set number that I’m happy with, he’s happy with, then we go to the customers, we go to the promoters, the buyers. And then we get it done.
“That fight is more than just being explored. That fight’s been in the works for a while now. There’s a lot of steps to get done, there’s a lot of things to get done, but it’s the fight to make.”
Now, in an interview with Andy Nesbitt, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson gave his thoughts on the bout, saying:
“It might happen, for me personally as a sports fan, and a fan of mixed martial arts and combat sports in general, I’d like to see Conor defend his belt. I think him being two weight world champion, he was and then the UFC stripped him of the 145 pound belt, I’d like to see him defend a belt. What’s the point of being champ if you have no desire to defend it? Not like he has no desire to defend it, but I’d like to see him defend it once. Fight Khabib Nurmagomedov or the winner of Tony Ferguson, then when they try to find a #1 contender you go off and do your boxing thing and then you come back if he’s healthy enough.”
“I wanna see him fight the winner of Khabib-Tony. I watch Floyd fight, he fights the same every single time. I’d rather see him fight Tony and Khabib. If I had to pay for one, I’d pay for Tony [or] Khabib, than Floyd, I won’t pay for Floyd.”
Ultimately, while Johnson said that McGregor “has a chance”, he believes Mayweather would take the win in a boxing match.
