Conor McGregor will not have to wear Reebok when he fights Floyd Mayweather

Last week, we learned that UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor’s much discussed boxing match with undefeated great Floyd Mayweather was officially a go.

Unsurprisingly, the finalization of this fight took a good deal of negotiating, as McGregor is still under contract with the UFC. While the UFC ultimately allowed McGregor to bend the terms of his contract to compete in this fight with Mayweather, however, it was not immediately clear how his sponsorship situation would pan out. As a UFC fighter, after all, McGregor is required to wear Reebok during his fights.

Apparently, however, McGregor will be free to pursue his own sponsors when he fights Mayweather. He is not obligated to wear Reebok. McGregor’s manager, Audie Attar, shared this interesting news on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

“There’s a lot of open categories that we’ve been negotiating with brands, including Reebok,” Attar said, clarifying that just because McGregor doesn’t have to wear Reebok, doesn’t mean he won’t.

“We’ll see how that all plays out.”He added.“He’s currently a free agent with regard to athletic apparel. We’re still in discussions with Reebok and other brands.”

“It’s definitely a great opportunity for Conor and any brand we decide to align with.”

The UFC’s outfitting deal with Reebok has been incredibly controversial since it launched, as it is widely argued that the deal does not pay fighters enough. It will be interesting to see what kind of fighter reactions are generated by news that McGregor will not have to wear the brand when he fights Floyd Mayweather.
Do you think it’s fair that Conor McGregor will be able to pursue his own sponsorship when he fights Floyd Mayweather on August 26? Should other fighters receive similar exemptions? Join the conversation in the comments section.
