Dana White waiting to see what Amanda Nunes wants to do before deciding fate of women's featherweight division

Drake Riggs - November 15, 2021

Dana White and the UFC introduced the 145-pound women’s featherweight division in February 2017 and there has been little to no build since. The promotion began the process of bringing in featherweights by signing the weight class’ all-time best, Cris “Cyborg” Justino. However, the future UFC titleholder would compete at 140-pound catchweight contests prior to the division’s official creation in an attempt to get her down to the 135-pound bantamweight class.

Valentina Shevchenko claims Amanda Nunes doesn't want trilogy fight

Cole Shelton - September 29, 2021

As Valentina Shevchenko and Amanda Nunes continue to dominate their divisions, the call for the trilogy has only increased, yet for Shevchenko, she says the Brazilian doesn’t want it. Shevchenko and Nunes first fought back at UFC 196 where the Brazilian won a decision. They then had their rematch at UFC 215 as Nunes was defending her bantamweight title and once again the Brazilian got her hand raised, yet this time was by a controversial split decision. Since then, Shevchenko went down to flyweight and has gone 8-0 including defending her belt six times. With that, many are calling for the trilogy to happen, however, Shevchenko claims Nunes isn’t interested in it.

Nunes’ wife Nina recently took to social media to confirm that their family is negative of the coronavirus, and that led to Pena publicly asking Dana White why the fight with Nunes can’t be rescheduled for an upcoming card.

Julianna Pena calls for interim UFC women's bantamweight title with Amanda Nunes sidelined

Adam D Martin - August 9, 2021

Pena was supposed to fight Nunes in the co-main event of UFC 265 on Saturday night in Houston, Texas, but the fight was postponed until later this year after Nunes tested positive for COVID-19. Nunes’ wife Nina recently took to social media to confirm that the Nunes family is now healthy and negative of COVID-19, but the UFC has still not re-booked this fight. The original plan was for the UFC to get this fight going in December, but as far as Pena goes, that is too long of a wait considering she is ready to scrap now.

Amanda Nunes issues statement after withdrawing from Julianna Pena title fight at UFC 265

Adam D Martin - July 30, 2021

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes issued a statement after withdrawing from the Julianna Pena title fight at UFC 265. Nunes tested positive for COVID-19 and her 135lbs title fight against Pena — which was scheduled to take place next Saturday night at UFC 265 in Houston, Texas — had to be canceled. The UFC’s plan is to keep this title fight intact and book it for later this year once Nunes is healthy again. It’s unfortunate that Nunes and Pena had to have been taken off the card, but sadly, this is unlikely to be the only COVID-19 withdrawal coming up given how many people around the world are still dealing with the coronavirus and its variants.

Amanda Nunes wants featherweight division open 'as long as I'm champion'

Drake Riggs - May 4, 2021

Amanda Nunes is the UFC’s first and only female dual-division champion. She intends to keep it that way if she has any say in the matter. Immediately following Nunes’ last successful title defense at UFC 259 against Megan Anderson, the challenger in Anderson proclaimed that the 145-pound featherweight class was done in the UFC. Soon after, the UFC denied that possibility, and Nunes has also since expressed that it wasn’t true.
