MMA NEWS – Noons Next for Melendez?

With Noons and Melendez coming off of recent victories in the Strikeforce organization, fans and media press are inquiring about a possible match for the lightweight championship.

“I think Gilbert’s a great champion,” Noons told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show. “I think he’s definitely one of the best. Styles make fights. I think I’m getting better as a fighter just all around, everywhere. I think I match up well.”

“He was very successful with the jab,” Noons said of Masvidal. “I don’t think he did enough to win the fight. I personally don’t think Gil would stand that much with me. I think [Melendez] has a great ground game too. I think he would go wherever his advantage is.”

Whether or not these tactics would be implemented remains to be seen as Melendez also voiced interest in fighting UFC lightweights.

However, Zuffa and the UFC announced that it intends to sustain the Strikeforce brand, implying that a Strikeforce and UFC crossover fight would not happen anytime soon.

“The UFC said they’re going to build it and make it successful,” Noons said. “We’ll just kind of see what they do. Every time they say they’re going to do something, they do it. We’ll kind of see where it goes from there. I think as long as I can progress as a fighter and get better and put exciting fights on, and as long as I win, I’ll have a job somewhere, under Strikeforce or UFC.”

A quick glance at the Strikeforce roster suggests an inevitable bout between the two fighters in the future. However, since KJ Noons lost to Masvidal this past June, is he deserving of a fight against the lightweight champion?

I’d much rather see Gilbert in the UFC but if not this would be an interesting fight. I wonder if the Zuffa is keeping Gilbert where he is until he fulfills his SF contract? Maybe when he completes the alloted number of fights on that old contract he could switch promotions without pissing off Showtime.

  2. Lex w says:

    Kj dosent stand a chance

  3. REALTALK says:

Ive always liked Kj but he sounds like a fucking idiot here. Gil didnt do enough to win the fight? WTF he landed twice as many punches straight to Masvidals face. Noons is still bitter about losing to Nick

    • mmaislandjunkie says:

      or losing to masvidal

      • REALTALK says:

Idk if hes bitter over losing to Masvidal I dont see why he would be saying Gil didnt do enough to win. That fight look really one sided to me

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

trying to justify his loss to masvidal by sayin masvidal was better than gil.

        • J_Jimbo says:

“He was very successful with the jab,” Noons said of *Masvidal*. “I don’t think he did enough to win the fight.

He said he didn’t think Masvidal did enough to win the fight, not Gil.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

probably should have read the article before responding to real talk.

    • Kalirudeboy says:

He said Masvidal (the loser to Melendez, and the last guy who beat KJ) did not do enough to win the fight. Reading comprehension leads to real talk.

  4. Mike Diaz says:

At this point, KJ needs redemption from the Masvidal fight and a #1 contender fight between the two would only show the lack of depth in the SF roster. Melendez is left holding the bag……TEAM PENN!!!!!!

  5. Chartmonster says:

Noons has improved his skills..hope he beats melendez! Good scrap right here!
