MMA NEWS – Ronda Rousey Gets Wish, Showdown With Tate Likely For March

In what has probably become the biggest matchup in women’s MMA, Strikeforce champion, Miesha Tate will likely face four-fight MMA veteran and Olympic Judo medalist, Ronda Rousey in her first title defense.

Rousey has been campaigning for the fight ever since her last victory over Julia Budd this past November. However in order to challenge for the title, hurdles of weight class became an issue and many of her detractors cried that it would not be fair to debut in the new weight class with a title fight.

Strikeforce officials apparently don’t care about whats fair and are reportedly working on finalizing this championship title fight as soon as possible. However, no bout agreements have been signed at this time.

The bout, if booked, is expected to go down in Columbus Ohio sometime in March at the Nationwide arena, alongside the Strikeforce HW Grand Prix final between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier.

After capturing her Olympic Bronze Medal in Judo, Rousey entered the MMA scene with three amateur fights that ended in under a minute via armbar. She then went on to make her pro debut back in March of 2011 and to date has finished all four of her professional bouts in the same fashion, armbar in under a minute.

All of her contests this far have been at 145 pounds, but in order to face Tate she must shed ten pounds which is apparently not an issue.

Tate will look to defend her 135 pound title for the first time since capturing Strikeforce gold against Marloes Coenen in July. She is on a six-fight win streak, which includes winning the Strikeforce one-night female tournament to earn her title shot and has gone 11-1 in her past 12 fights. Her only loss in this phenomenal run came way of former champ Sarah Kaufman.
