MMA NEWS – Gegard Mousasi Waiting for Title Shot, UFC Aspirations as Well?

Nearly two years since he lost the title, Gegard Mousasi is waiting in the wings for another light-heavyweight title shot from Strikeforce executives. It is rumored that Mousasi will face the victor of Muhammed Lawal vs. Lorenz Larkin, who are fighting for the vacant light-heavyweight title that was relinquished by Dan Henderson as he transitioned over to the UFC.
With one fight left on his Strikeforce contract, it will be interesting to see whether Mousasi will stay with Strikeforce or whether he will look to other organizations. Pending on if he becomes the new champion in his next fight, he may defend the title for an extended period of time.
However, Gegard wants to push himself to the utmost of his abilities, which means an eventual change of scenery.
“I want to fight the big names, and the big names are in the UFC,” Mousasi said. “I just need to win impressively so people would like to see me in the UFC,” he said. “The UFC is definitely the place I want to end up.”
When interviewed on MMAjunkie.com Radio, Mousasi also voiced his interested in fighting at middleweight against the current champion, Anderson Silva.
“You don’t get those chances a lot, so fighting a big name like him, that’s a big opportunity,” Mousasi said. “I would definitely want to do that if they gave me the chance.”
Mousasi would more than likely have to win back his Strikeforce belt in order to earn a chance in the UFC. A possible rematch could take place between him and Lawal should “King Mo” win the belt. With the disappointing loss in his memory, Mousasi knows that he will do things differently next time.
“I’m going to go in with the mindset of getting up as quickly as he takes me down. I’m going to get up and focus on takedown defense. I’m going to work on wrestling even more. I think wrestling is not going to be a factor this time. He cannot knock me out. People can say whatever they want to say, but I can defend myself in the standup, and with the ground and pound, I can always protect myself. The only chance he has is to win my decision, and I feel I have a lot more ways to win. So I just have to work on my defense, and I can win the fight.”

I’d love to see Gegard in the UFC, I think he’d do great especially if he could cut down to MW but I don’t know of he could considering what he looked like in his last fight against OSP.
